A Franciscan Blessing

IMG_7887

"May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom, and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, and starvation, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.

And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done."

  1. your post reminds me of something that a friend told me about... finding blessings in misfortune. one example would be getting a parking spot that is in BFE. so you've got yourself a long walk BUT it is a testament to the fact that you can INDEED walk. "a blessing in disguise" ... for me, it was being fired from my job stateside. i was just watching a movie last night called THE BOONDOCK SAINTS. the priests blasta "good men for doing nothing" as he cites the murder of KItty Genovese (a well known murder that happened in NY). indifference can be a scary thing indeed...

  2. Hi! indifference i think is what we fall into when we embrace what thomas paine nicely described as the "stale calm of utopia" it appears like utopia because you're not bothered by the ugly things that are happening and so there's an illusion of inner peace ... but it could be simply cowardice and laziness. i worry sometimes that i do not have the courage to leave my little utopia and pursue the path of uncertainty which holds the promise of greater significance and meaning. so this prayer kinda jolted me.

btw, what does BFE stand for?
